Casa do Passal was once the home of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Righteous Among the Nations, who rescued untold thousands from the horrors of Nazi persecution by granting visas to neutral Portugal in defiance of his government’s orders. For this act of disobedience, Sousa Mendes paid a heavy personal price, and his abandoned and ruined home has stood for decades as a symbol of this injustice.
Now, the Casa do Passal, which has been classified as a National Monument, will be given a new lease on life thanks to far-sighted government officials Pedro Saraiva and Celeste Amaro, and thousands of supporters worldwide from the very beginning of the project!
The Phoenix is finally rising and a the dream is coming true!
