Casa no Castanheiro

Beautifully located between the Historical Villages of Trancoso and Marialva with a stunning view over Marofa Mountain, Casa no Castanheiro is the perfect refuge at the heart of a dazzling landscape, as well as a great example of a sustainable accommodation. Designed by prestigious Portuguese architect João Mendes Ribeiro, Casa no Castanheiro was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.

Beautifully located between the Historical Villages of Trancoso and Marialva, in Valeflor village, with a stunning view over Marofa Mountain, Casa no Castanheiro is the perfect refuge at the heart of a dazzling landscape, as well as a great example of a sustainable accommodation.

Designed by prestigious Portuguese architect João Mendes Ribeiro, Casa no Castanheiro was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022. Casa no Castanheiro is a simple and light modular structure, a cabin made of wood and cork, taking full advantage of the landscape and enhancing the feeling of isolation. Embracing a secular chestnut tree, as if protecting and being protected by it, it is the ideal hideaway.

The shade of the chestnut tree protects the house in summer but its absence of leaves in winter helps to expose it to sunlight. The windows, opened in each facade, allow the gentle breeze of the region to cross the entire interior space and refresh it during the hot summer nights.

This refuge house is prepared to welcome a maximum of two to three persons (two adults and one child), with a bathroom with shower and integrated kitchenette solution, in a total area of about 25 square meters - the minimum living space with only the absolutely essential for a short stay.

A place to disconnect from the daily routine and to embrace the inspiring solitude of nature!
