Tomar is a great destination for gastronomy lovers, especially sweet-toothed travellers. Apart from welcoming restaurants, where we can taste the best local cuisine, there are countless regional sweets. True temptations that are very hard to resist!
As many other historical cities in Portugal, Tomar has a century-old tradition of convent-inspired sweets. It's hard to tell which one is the tastiest, but the sweet "Beija-me depressa" (literally translated:"kiss me quickly"!) is most certainly a great highlight!
Also known as "China slices", the sweet Fatias de Tomar ("Tomar slices") is a deeply unique sweet speciality of the city. This sweet was created in the Convent of Christ and the first reference to it was made in 1876 in the book of João da Mata named The art of cooking. They were said to be the favourite dessert of friars. These sweet slices are baked in a special "chimney pot".
The "sweet cheeses" are egg and almond-based sweets, an exclusive of the classical patisserie Estrelas de Tomar. Opened in 1960, this patisserie is without any doubt the oldest in Tomar, famous for its delicate sweets that burst with flavour and exquisiteness.
The restaurant Infante is located in the emblematic Templar city of Tomar. Here you will find a pleasant space, on the main street leading to the World Heritage Convent of Christ, as well a great starting point for a walk through the old town of the beautiful city of Tomar.
Opened everyday, this restaurant offers an exquisite fusion cuisine, combining the very best of the traditional cuisine with an innovative approach. With capacity for 180 guests, the restaurant has a private parking, as well as welcoming comfortable atmosphere.
