Described in mythology as the food of the gods, honey is definitely one of the most iconic products of Center of Portugal, owner of a deeply symbolic meaning. The honey of Lousã Mountain is no exception.
Displaying an amber colour or dark amber, it has a very peculiar aroma and some astringency, owing to the nectar of the heather! Its particular characteristics are closely related to the ecosystem, where the Ericaceae and the Chestnut trees predominate, making the excellence of this Product with Protected Designation of Origin. The honey-producing region of Lousã includes the following municipalities: Arganil, Castanheira de Pêra, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Pampilhosa da Serra, Pedrógão Grande, Penela and Vila Nova de Poiares.
Serra da Lousã honey (Protected Designation of Origin since 1996) is obtained from the Apis mellifera iberiensis bee species. It is produced in mobile hives throughout Lousã Mountain and it is extracted between May and August. The quality of Serra da Lousã honey is due to its geography and climate. The passion of locals for beekeeping is also a big plus, playing a major role in the development of this pivotal agricultural activity.
