Known in the world wine scene as the "rebel producer" of Bairrada wine region, Luís Pato is an outstanding winemaker of Portugal, who started to produce wines in 1980. His first wine was a pure Baga from an exceptional quality and absolute rareness that is sought by appreciators as a treasure.
His father, João Pato, was the first bottler of Bairrada, after the classification as Demarcated Wine Region. From his father Luís inherited the non-conformism and the desire to make something new and to constantly innovate. While breaking conventions.
In 1985 begins 2 revolutions at Bairrada: destems Baga grapes and matures the wine in new French oak casks. In 1988 he plants Baga from ungrafted vines to understand pre-phyloxera wines and produces the first Vinhas Velhas’ wine from Portugal. In 2005, he makes his first wine with his daughter Filipa Pato, the FLP, using the cryo-extraction method. In 2009, Luís Pato made his first natural sweet wines (white, rosé and red), which he named Abafado Molecular.
The 60 hectares of vineyards are planted with Baga and Touriga Nacional (red varieties) as well as Maria Gomes, Bical, Bairrada's Cercial and Sercialinho (white varieties). The vineyards are distributed in two different types of soil: sandy and chalky-clay.
Also known as "Mr. Baga" or "Mr. Bairrada", Luís Pato became a world-acclaimed wine producer who has several prizes across his remarkable career.
