Apart from its unquestionable value, the precious Crown of Our Lady of Fátima owns a deep symbolic meaning. It contains a non-precious element: the bullet of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. Definitely, the most important piece treasured by the Shrine of Fátima. Among the most characteristic pieces of the Precious Crown of Our Lady of Fatima, made up of jewellery offered by the Portuguese Women in gratitude for Portugal not being among the belligerent countries in World War II, are the pendants that flank the cross shaft with which the crown is topped. The presence of these pendants places the crown of the Virgin of Fatima in the long line of crowns that use this type of visual strategy in their morphology, among which are the crowns of Christian antiquity.
Pope Benedict XVI once said that "Our Lady is crowned with the jewels of joy and the bullet of pain".
