Salreu rice

After many years as set-aside areas, the rice fields of Salreu, in Estarreja municipality, in the region of Aveiro, were brought back to life by the environmental project BioRia. Portugal is the third biggest rice producer in Europe.

After many years as set-aside areas, the rice fields of Salreu, in Estarreja municipality, in the region of Aveiro, were brought back to life by the environmental project BioRia.

Rice seeding happens in spring, while the rice crop takes place usually in September.

The rice marinas of Salreu and Canelas, in Estarreja, were even sponsored by several local companies, individuals and cultural associations. The rebirth of rice production in Vouga River basin is an inspiring example for the future of sustainable agriculture.

World acclaimed street artist VHILS payed a tribute to Dona Florinda, a rice-picking lady who used to work in the rice fields of Salreu. She and her husband, Mr. Rola, were actually the last rice field workers to employ traditional farming methods in the cultivation of rice. An homage to the past, as well as wake-up call for the importance of preserving natural ecosystems, so meaningful for communities.

Portugal is the third biggest rice producer in Europe and the first rice-consuming country.
