Teatro Aveirense, located at the heart of Aveiro, was officially opened on March 5th 1881. This theatre has presented since then a deeply diversified cultural programme. The building of this iconic theatre underwent several transformations throughout the centuries. The last major renovation took place between 2000 and 2003, designed by Portuguese architect João Carreira. Reopened on 23 October 2003, the city now has a municipal space with excellent technical conditions and a professional staff with skills in the performing arts.
The multimedia arts have also become part of Teatro Aveirense vocabulary in this new phase, which becomes clear in its programme as well as in the current website, where there is an area with specific contents. Without distorting its basic mission, based on the stage arts, Teatro Aveirense expands its field of action to other forms of artistic expression, where video, digital arts, sound installations and other similar possibilities are included.
A strategy designed for the long term, with a physical and online dimension, which brings together reference creators, emerging artists and work with the community.
It is a space for aesthetic enjoyment, training, education, dissemination and promotion of identity and culture, a place where an open cultural and social dialogue occurs, in which different perspectives on art and society are presented, seeking to provide visions of a better future, increasingly open to Europe and the world.
