Teatro Viriato

Opened in the end of the 19th century, the Theatro Boa União closes its doors as Teatro Viriato in 1960. 38 years later, in 1998, it reopens its doors to the public led by the dance company founded by prestigious Portuguese dancer Paulo Ribeiro.

Starting from a project of the Paulo Ribeiro Company, assumed and supported by the Viseu City Hall and the Ministry of Culture, the revival of this performance hall intends to offer the public regular access to the performing arts, of recognised professional, technical and artistic value, integrating Viseu in the national and international cultural scene.  

The goal is to return the Theatre to the city, allowing the community of Viseu to discover new artistic languages in a welcoming and modern space that integrates elements alluding to its memory.  

With the renovation of Teatro Viriato, the memory of the golden times when the city of Viseu had five performance halls and cinemas (Teatro da Rua Escura, Teatro Viriato, Teatro Paraíso, Avenida Teatro, Cine-Rossio) is recovered.
