Almeida History and Military Museum is housed in the former so-called “Casamatas”, underground galleries dating back to the 18th century that were used for military defence, comprising 20 rooms and corridors. These bomb-proof constructions are absolutely unique in the world.
This museum is an interactive multimedia space that recreates Portuguese History from Medieval Age to contemporary times with a special focus on Peninsular Wars, invasion and siege of Almeida. The permanent exhibition presents replicas of weapons and also original pieces.
Visitors can witness the evolution of war making since the foundation of Almeida.
