Casa das Penhas Douradas – Burel Expedition Hotel is a charming hotel situated at an elevation of some 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level in the midst of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, set in a unique mountain landscape.
Perfectly at home in its environment and taking inspiration from the local architecture, the hotel has been remodeled using natural materials like cork and birchwood, which insulate the interior and exterior of the building. It also boasts architecture comprised of simple lines designed by architect Pedro Brígida.
The hotel has 15 rooms and 2 suites, all of which offer scenic views and a very intimate and comfortable atmosphere. They are lined with birchwood and adorned with large windows and balconies that offer a clear view of the mountains of the Serra da Estrela. Guest lounges with their enormous windows extend the view of the surrounding landscape. Decoration has been done using warm, welcoming tones and also featured are pieces from Nordic and Portuguese artists and designers. The restaurant is also scenic. Its haute cuisine has transformed the Serra's regional cuisine with a guaranteed touch of innovation, from the sourcing of local, seasonal ingredients.
Casa das Penhas Douradas even features a spa with various treatment rooms, a Vichy shower, and a relaxation room where tea is served in silence. It has even developed a set of signature rituals, massages, and treatments which utilize scented oils prepared using hand-picked herbs from the Serra da Estrela, produced by Terraké and Thalgo. In addition to these amenities, there is a heated indoor pool featuring scenic views, hydromassage, and a sauna.
