The house is the result of the renovation of a traditional house of Serra da Estrela. Original materials were reused, namely the indoor wood on the floors and the furniture. The original granite was kept, along with cork, crucial for the thermal insulation of the house.

The origin of the name of the house is based on the scientific name of the elder tree, sambucus nigra.
