The inland region Beira Interior is characterised by its heterogeneity, where the imposing Serra da Estrela, Serra da Gardunha, Serra da Marofa and Serra da Malcata take turns with plains as far as the eye can see. The soils favourable to growing vines are mostly granite, with important areas of schist and quartz veins.
The altitude marks the identity of its wines, with 300 to 750 m-high vineyards. The harsh climate, with hot, dry summers and very cold, harsh winters, marks the identity of wines made from typical grape varieties: Síria, Fonte Cal and Arinto for the whites, and Rufete, Marufo, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional for the reds.
Beira Interior is also known for having more than 1,000 hectares of organically grown vineyards due to the unique natural conditions of its territory. The region is also characterised by its rivers, in particular the Côa, the Zêzere and the Mondego, which are embraced by the Douro and the Tagus to the north and south of the region, respectively.
Visits to the Mondego Walkways that recently won a World Travel Award, Vila de Rei, Barrocal and Orvalho allow you to enjoy the magnificent and unique landscape of Beira Interior. The Historical Villages and Schist Villages are places of preserved history, culture, tradition, heritage and people who win you over with their simplicity and genuinity.
The biodiversity of the fauna and flora, the relics of industrial archaeology, its natural beauty and its historical heritage make every visit to the region a deeply unique and memorable experience!
