Barra Lighthouse

The sun and sea of the coast of Aveiro invite you to visit its beaches. You should start your visit at Barra Beach, located between the São Jacinto Dunes and the Costa Nova beach, and discover the Barra Light. Rising majestically over the sea, this is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal and one of the tallest in Europe. It marks the site where the Aveiro Lagoon meets the sea.

Here, where extreme sports live side by side with the ancient art of fishing, this 19^th century lighthouse rises more than 60 meters above sea level. Prior to its inauguration in 1893, boats would be drawn into land because the coast was too flat and it gave the illusion of being further than it actually was. Since then, Barra Light has been ensuring shipping safety, serving as a guide when ships are approaching the barra and harbour of the city of Aveiro.

Whether you come to surf, windsurf, sail, fishing or just to spend a day at the beach, you should walk through the golden sand and discover Barra Light. Climb the 271 stone steps of its spiral staircase which leads to the top, and watch the vast sea which embraces everything around it. Or you can just relax on the sand and wait for nightfall, watching as the boats arrive and leave the barra, escorted by seagulls, until the light beam from the lighthouse appears, slow and safe, to guide the fishermen. Then, make your night longer with a party and have fun at the bars of one of the most visited beaches in the Aveiro area.
