Church of Santa Maria

The Church of Santa Maria, located at the heart of the historical centre of Covilhã, is covered in blue and white tiles depicting the life of the Virgin Mary.

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal! This church was known in the past as the Chapel of Santa Maria do Castelo, and its construction dates back to the middle of the 16th century.

From 1872 to 1876 this church becomes a Baroque-style church and in the decade of 40 of the 20th century, the facade is ornamented with beautiful blue and white tiles, portraying the life of the Virgin Mary. There are 11 altars within the church, 5 of them devoted to the Our Lady Mary, depicted in 9 different images.
