Enjoying a stunning location at the dazzling Açor Mountain, the recently opened Geoscope of Fajão is the living proof that the Schist Villages are among the world's rarest destinations for dark sky observation. In 2019, Schist Villages have been certified by the Starlight Foundation as an International Starlight Tourism Destination thanks to the Dark Sky Schist Villages project.
The observation point, located at the top of the Schist Village Fajão, is a half-spherical iron dome, which is 7,5 meters high and 15 meters wide. Inspired by an original idea of Buckminster Fuller, reinterpreted by the Portuguese designer João Nunes and designed by the architect José Leite, this landmark is perfectly integrated in the surrounding natural landscape of Açor Mountain. The ideal spot to gaze at the fascinating starry skies.
The Geoscope of Fajão consists of an observation point, a learning kiosk and a welcome area at the center of Fajão, providing both theoretical and practical data. This project has the scientific coordination of the astronomer José Matos. Observation sessions "Trip to the light of the stars" will take place, as well as star photography sessions and guided visits (previous booking required).
A gateway to the most inspiring starry skies! Closer to the cosmos.
