Located at a height of 770 meters in a glacial valley surrounded by white-clad mountains, the stunning Mountain Village Loriga is known as "the Portuguese Switzerland", because of its dazzling natural landscape that resembles the Alps. A luxury for the eyes!
This ancestral village owns a deeply rich historical heritage with testimonies of the Roman legacy and Medieval time. Loriga used to be one of the most industrialised places of the region, housing several wool factories. In fact, wool tradition continues to be quite enduring, since visitors can still see flocks of sheep grazing in the fields along with their caring shepherds.
The main gastronomic icons are: the kid goat, the typical regional sausages ("enchidos"), the cheese and the so-called "black cake" that recalls the English cake (probably because of the international influences related to the textile industry). Locals say that the black cake is "a Portuguese cake with an English accent".
