Housed in the 16th century Convent of S. Domingos, a crucial historical building of the city. Renovated by prestigious Portuguese architect Carrilho da Graça, MIAA is organised in 8 centres: Roman sculpture; Pre-History; Bronze and Iron Ages; Classical Antiquity; Treasure; Middle Age and Modern Age Art; Middle Age and Renaissance sculpture in Abrantes and Painting of Maria Lucília Moita.
This museum focuses o the history of human occupation in the region. The exhibited regional collections interact with more general pieces from Europe, Mediterranean basin and several ancient civilisations of Asia.
Apart from the relevant archaeological collection, MIAA also presents in 2 rooms regular contemporary art exhibitions with works that belongs to the Figueiredo Ribeiro Contemporary Art Collection, in the custody of the Municipality of Abrantes.
The cloister of this iconic museum tells the story of the Convent of S. Domingos, as well as the city. Opened on December 8th 2021, MIAA is the place to feel the spirit of Abrantes.
MIAA was awarded the Museum of the Year 2023, a deeply prestigious prize given by the Portuguese Association of Museums.
