Centered around the Roman Church of Santa Marinha, this medieval necropolis has been partially excavated to reveal its vast extent, attracting archaeologists and history enthusiasts alike. The site is connected to prominent historical figures, like King Sancho II, as well as four national monuments, such as the unique “Poio” Castle and the romanesque Church of Santa Maria.
Since 2019, archaeological efforts have unveiled over 700 graves, some with well-preserved bones despite the challenging climate for conservation. The project, led by archaeologist Maria do Céu Ferreira, has catalogued these remains for potential genetic analysis. However, the excavation is nearing completion, and some graves will soon be reburied for preservation, with a future interpretation center planned in the former Church of Santa Marinha.
This discovery highlights the deeply rich cultural and historical heritage of this surprising village.
