Ideal for families, Paredes da Vitória beach is located very close to the World Heritage Monastery of Alcobaça. It is a perfect beach for families, because of its peacefulness, safety and closeness to the river.
The origins of Paredes da Vitória are quite remote. There are even traces in the Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros of a Roman road (Estrada Romana da Carreirancha - Alqueidão da Serra) dating from between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, which would have linked Tomar to the port of Paredes, Collipo (Leiria) and Conímbriga. The port of Paredes has thus played a major role in the economical development of the region.
Back in 1500 the Port of Paredes had a fort and 17 caravels to defend its harbour. There are even records that Vasco da Gama's armada, before setting sail for India, docked here for supplies. However, the very strong winds in this region blew the sands over the town and harbour with such force that everything was destroyed. With the invasion of the sea sands, the settlement was abandoned, with the only remains being the Chapel of Our Lady of Victory, the hermit's house and a mill.
A quite striking rocky formation called “castle” resembles a resting lion facing the Atlantic. At the centre of the beach there is a small village with pleasant terraces, restaurants, a kids’ park and public toilets.
Paredes da Vitória beach has improved its facilities in recent years, standing out as a perfect beach for surf lessons. Its waters have won the Gold Quality distinction, as well as Blue Flag and Accessible Beach.
