This was the ancient Throne Room, dating back to the middle of the 17th century. This outstanding room was designed by Master António Tavares. Worth highlighting: a wooden ceiling with grotesque paintings by Jacinto da Costa; carpet-style tiles made in Lisbon and the portraits of the Kings by Carlos Falch, João Batista Ribeiro and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro.
When you visit “Sala dos Capelos”, you can also visit “Sala do Exame Privado” and “Sala das Armas”.The room “Sala do Exame Privado” (Room of the Private Exam) was part of the Royal wing of the palace. This was the monarch’s chamber where he rested. This was also the place of the first meeting between the Rector D. Garcia de Almeida and the University professors, which happened on 13th October 1537, when the University was definitely transferred to Coimbra.
The room “Sala das Armas” (Weapons’ Room) belonged to the Royal alley of the former palace. It stored several weapons of the Academic Royal Guard that are still used today by the guards on the solemn academic ceremonies.
