The theatre Teatro Municipal da Guarda is the stage of the main cultural events of the city of Guarda, deeply linked to the urban community by organising several remarkable street shows, as well as guided performed tours to the precious 8 hundred years-old historical centre. Teatro Municipal da Guarda has a very eclectic programme all year long, characterised by diversity, sense of contemporaneity and cosmopolitanism, embracing different audiences who are very demanding.
Teatro Municipal da Guarda works in partnership with other theatres, such as the Spanish theatre network of the region Castilla y Léon. This theatre values the engagement of local communities, playing a major role on the cultural scene of Centro de Portugal.
The building of Teatro Municipal da Guarda has the signature of Portuguese architect Carlos Veloso, consisting of two huge blocks of concrete and glass in a minimalist style. It is perfectly set in the surrounding landscape, which enables it a huge scenic aura.
The biggest cube includes the Great Auditorium with capacity for 600 persons, and the Small Auditorium with 164 seats, whereas the smallest cube houses the cafeteria with capacity for 100 persons, a gallery and a 3-storey underground parking.
Teatro Municipal da Guarda has already been nominated to the European Architecture Award Mies van der Rohe.
