The 16 meter-high watchtower Torre de Vigia is a memorable landmark in the landscape of Geopark Naturtejo, in the municipality of Proença-a-Nova, near Castelo Branco. Designed by Pritzker award-winning Portuguese architect Siza Vieira, this is the last watchtower of Center of Portugal.
Set on the quartzite massifs of the Serra das Talhadas where the old watchtower stood, which have been rebuilt with reinforced stability, the transparent platforms at different levels allow the entire landscape to be contemplated. At the top, under the lookout cabin, invisible rectangular solar panels supply energy without any visual impact on the landscape.
Opened in 2021, Torre de Vigia is a milestone for the interior of the country, because it was the first project by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in this territory, as well as the first work in terms of metal structures. The second work was the stunning Zebro belvedere, offering a 360 degree view over the surrounding landscape.
The structure has 60 stairs, but it is not suitable for physically challenged persons. In this area, there are mountain biking and walking trails available, as well as climbing and paragliding facilities.
