Street art continues to fill up the cities of Centro de Portugal with colour and passion. From Aveiro to Covilhã the most remarkable street artists are leaving their fantastic imprints on the steadily changing city streets.

Aveiro

VHILS has been developing a very unique visual language, starting out from the more illegal and interventive side of graffiti, working the removal of surface layers of walls, objects and other, non-conventional media, which aim symbolically to establish a relation of continuity between cultural and social disparities.

VHILS’s artwork is a revolution in the stencil technique in its use of unusual tools. Through the destruction of walls, he explores the layers of urban space and its history. Old papers, worn out posters, wood panels, brick walls are attacked with chisels, jackhammer, acid, or explosives, in order to sculpt his stencil on the wall. VHILS’s portraits underline an important contrast between new and ancient; he makes visible the inside face of these buildings. VHILS tries to give a new face to the city which is, for him, a ground of popular inspirations. It's what happens at Aveiro: a dazzling face carved into a wall appeared in front of Aveiro’s Railway Station.

Covilhã

No doubt that the city of Covilhã is becoming the centre of urban art in the region of Centro de Portugal thanks to the creative action of Wool Fest – Covilhã Art Festival. This Festival honours Covilhã’s glorious past as one of the most important wool-producing cities in Portugal and aims to be a major urban art reference in the country. Wool Fest organises regular events, filling the walls of the city with colourful paints deeply related to the wool theme. The city of Covilhã will never be the same!

Estarreja

The municipality of Estarreja has created a consistent street art route that started with the inspiring work of Bordallo II, depicting a colourful Kingfisher out of waste. This work can be seen in the municipal park of Antuã, in Estarreja. After the success of Bordallo II work “Guarda-rios”- created for the Birdwatching Fair ObservaRia – Urban Art Festival ESTAU has brought the community and art together through several ways, such as mural painting, installations, workshops, movies, conferences, guided visits and performances.

Figueira da Foz

It’s amazing how street art can give a whole new life to cities and during FUSING Culture Experience, the city of Figueira da Foz became even more appealing and vibrant! Curated by WOOL, the street artist Add Fuel has conceived a fantastic mural made of typical Portuguese tiles in a beautiful area of the city. But there’s s much to discover!

Fundão

The city of Fundão is not only about mouth-watering red-passion cherries. The lacework creations of the Polish artist Nespoon have surely put Fundão on the street art map in Portugal! The work entitled “Fundão” was created by the Polish artist NeSpoon. The work of this artist consists of printing traditional laceworks, either in clay or upon walls. According to her vision, laceworks contain a genetic code, deeply embedded in each culture. We find symmetry in all laces, some sort of order and harmony.

Viseu

Viseu is famous for its rich historical heritage, along with a unique gastronomy and outstanding wines. But there’s more to it! Old buildings, once abandoned or somehow forgotten, are now bursting with life and colour thanks to the creative work of several street artists who were invited by the municipality to leave their incredible mark in the city. The motto of the street art interventions in Viseu was the wine, since Viseu is the heart of Dão wine region, known for its remarkable wines that seduce wine lovers from all over the globe.
